I've amended my 2024 and would like to efile it. I'm confused on whether this is possible.

If not possible, what pages do I need to mail in the filing? I'm just deleting an inappropriate schedule - only the 1040 and 1040X and not the many other pages in the original submission?

You cannot e-file a 2024 amended return with TurboTax. You have to mail only the Form 1040-X and the revised version of any form or schedule that changed as a result of the changes in the amended return.

Thanks for this answer even though it's very disappointing. Efiling is one of the important reasons I use TurboTax. Also, the system doesn't let you know about this functional gap until the very last step. I delayed several weeks thinking I just needed to wait until the new efiling season opened.

Given the IRS' minimal staffing, I now expect it will be a long time before they even look at my amended filing and other than my certified mailing documentation I have no proof of sending it.

If you filed your 2024 return in TurboTax Online, and wish to e-file an amended return, it is possible. Contact TurboTax to receive your free download (if you filed in TTO, you will most likely qualify). If you filed elsewhere in 2024 or don’t qualify for a free edition, here is a link to purchase a copy: https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

Once you have your copy of 2024 TTD, go into TurboTax Online. Go to Tax Home, scroll down until you see 'Your tax returns & documents'. Select the year '2024' and then ‘Download .tax file’.

Open TurboTax Desktop and select ‘Amend a Filed Return’. Then select ‘Find a .tax file’. Select the file from your downloads. Highlight the file and then select, ‘Open’. You may want to go to File > Save As and rename the file.

Go back to the main screen and select ‘Amend a filed return’. Select ‘Find a tax file’. Highlight the renamed return and select ‘Open’. Select ‘Continue’.

Select ‘Yes, I’ve already filed my return’. Then select ‘I need to amend my 2024 return.’ Select ‘Continue’. Select ‘Update’ next to the section that needs to be amended. Once the section is updated, you will be brought back to the initial screen with ‘Update’. If you need to amend an additional section, click ‘Update’. If you have entered in all updated information, select ‘Done’.

Answer any questions in the next sections, click ‘Continue’ until you get to the screen ‘Why did you need to amend your return?’ Enter a brief description of why you need to amend. Click ‘Continue’ for the next few screens, until you get to the amended return summary. Review the summary for accuracy. Click ‘Continue’. Print and save your return.

Click on the ‘File’ tab above to file your return electronically. Then choose ‘Electronic Filing’ and then ‘File Electronically’. Follow the instructions. There may be some situations where the IRS does not permit e-filing. In this case, the return will have to be mailed in.

Thanks for this detailed response. Unfortunately, after getting rejected I already paper filed.

I use Turbo Tax Desktop and prepared the amended return using the product. I followed the steps you outlined but was told at the very last moment that I couldn't efile.

So you tried e-filing before you paper filed and TurboTax Desktop said you couldn't? Did it give you a reason why you couldn't e-file? I'm mostly curious so I can understand the process better.

I did the same and was told e-filing was closed since 2025 October. I can click on File button but the e-file version is the original tax form instead of the amendment doc 1040-X

I'm having the same problem e-filing a 2024 amended return with TurboTax Deluxe 2024 Desktop. At the final transmit step, it tells me that the Intuit Electronic Filing system is closed for the 2024 Personal Income Tax filing season. I called TurboTax customer service and spoke to an agent, then a supervisor, and I was told that they are no longer accepting e-filings for the 2024 1040-X. I asked for an explanation as to why they aren't accepted, but supervisor said she didn't know. As the previous poster said, this is really frustrating and disappointing.

The TurboTax support info says:

Generally, you can e-file your amended 2025, 2024, or 2023 federal return via TurboTax if your original return was also e-filed in TurboTax. However, there's a chance your return can't be e-filed based on your unique situation. If this happens, you'll need to print and mail your tax return.

This rejection doesn't appear to be due a unique situation; rather, it seems TT has stopped supporting this altogether.

At the final step, make sure your Transmit Date is the current date. Change it if a different date is pre-filled.

If you print and mail your Amended return, all you need to send is Form 1040X and documentation for whatever was changed (W-2, 1099).

Remember, there's no rush to Amend; it takes at least 12 weeks to process an Amended return (whether mailed or efiled) and you have up to three years to Amend.

Thank you, Marilyn. It won't accept a transmit date after 12/31/25. I've wasted several hours trying to figure out if there was a way to transmit the e-file. The TT support page (updated 3)19/26) says "Generally, you can e-file your amended 2025, 2024, 2023 federal return via TurboTax if your original return was also e-filed in TurboTax". Why does it not say that Intuit has closed e-filing for 2023 and 2024 amended returns?
