@debiowen4 Well....I just became aware that TT opened the system up to e-filing today, so maybe you really did e-file. If so, that is unfortunate, since your return is all wrong, and it is going to sit on a server for several weeks until the IRS begins to accept returns at the end of the month. There is nothing you can do to change your messed up return that has 2024 information on 2025 forms. You will need to wait for the IRS to either accept or reject the return. If they reject it, you can then go in and carefully delete the 2024 information and enter 2025 information instead, and re-file the return when all of your correct 2025 data has been entered. If the IRS accepts the incorrect return you just e-filed (unlikely) then you will have to wait for them to process it fully and then amend it by preparing a Form 1040X---which you will not be able to do much sooner than late February.

Meanwhile....if you need to file a 2024 tax return, follow the instructions give in the earlier reply and use desktop download software for 2024.

Need help to amend my taxes for 2025. I wasn’t thinking and did the 2024 taxes instead. I didn’t sign anything yet. How can I fix this?

It is impossible to e-file yet, so you can still fix this mistake. Do NOT click on anything that says "amend." You only do that for a return that has been filed and fully processed. Either use "clear and start over" to clear out the 2024 information you entered ---or if it is too late because you already registered or paid, you will need to delete any 2024 information you entered into the software and replace it when you have 2025 tax information to enter.

A 2024 return cannot be prepared online, and it cannot be e-filed.

You cannot change the tax year. The current online program is for 2025 only. Only a 2025 return can be prepared online and only a 2025 return can be e-filed.

Online preparation and e-filing for 2022, 2023, and 2024 is permanently closed.

Note: The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac. It cannot be used on a mobile device.

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2022, 2023, or 2024 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign, and mail the return(s)

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/state-taxes/contact-state-department-revenue/L9qVToi02_US_en_US?uid=m6e06um0

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
