I had activated Turbo Tax and done my tax, then I back up turbo tax with the whole windows 10 system to my computer. Then I uninstall the turbo tax. Today, I restore the windows 10 system from the backup which included a activated turbo tax to the same computer. When restore completed, I click on the Turbo Tex icon and it first run update then ask me to activate it. I don't understand why it asks me to activate it while I restore it to the same computer. So, I think Turbo Tax software has a bug. It shouldn't ask me to activate it again if I restore it to the same computer.

I believe the problem may be that imaging may not make a copy of everything. check the c:\users\user-name\appdata\roaming\intuit\turbotax\tyxx\ for two files with the extension .json if present then here's a link to other steps you can try

https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/install-products/turbotax-2019-turbotax-2020-requests-license-every/L77v5robh_US_en_US?uid=mfr8rwud

"It shouldn't ask me to activate it again if I restore it to the same computer." you would think but i had a similar issue restoring after a windows update. in my case i had a cloned drive, not an image, and i copied those two files from the clone to the operating folder and it worked.

If you download it again directly from TurboTax it probably won't ask you to activate. I upgraded my Windows 10 to 11 and had trouble updating my 2024 program (all the other years back to 2019 still worked fine). So I had to uninstall and reinstall 2024 by downloading it again. It never asked for my License Code or to download my state and I was good to go. And if you reinstall from your online account it has all the updates. And it's best if you reinstall programs instead of restoring them.

It is still not solved my problem. I re-download the software and install it, after it run update, when I entered my email, it asks me to activate it again. Don't know if my hard drive had been re-partition to make the C drive bigger affect it or not. If the software develop correctly, it won't be matter to replace a hard drive or re- partition it or make D-drive less and the space to make C drive bigger if installing it in the same computer. All Turbo Tax software have the same problems.
