The due date to file an amended return in order to claim a refund for tax year 2021 was April 18, 2025. There are a few limited exceptions to this deadline (for example if there was a federally declared disaster that impacted you, or you were serving in a combat zone.) If you need to file an amended return to report additional taxes due or correct an error that will carryover into future tax years, you can file an amended return after that time frame.

If you need to amend 2021 to properly prepare your 2024 tax return, you can still file an amended return. If that amended return results in the IRS owing you an additional refund, that extra refund will be forfeited to the government. If you owe more taxes, the IRS will send assess penalties and interest on the additional taxes owed.

The due date for filing a 2021 amended return was April 2025. Since an extension was filed for the 2024 tax return, which is when it was realized that the 2021 needs to be amended, can the 2021 return still be amended?
