Ok that makes sense. But if the employer can’t give us a new W2 with the correct social security number on it, what do we use? All they gave us was a form W-2c that says corrected wage and tax statement.

How to Amend

I filed taxes for my daughter Rainna Horn in 2023 on Turbo tax. She only got a small refund and we didn’t realize that it never came. This year I started to do her 2024 taxes and that’s when I realized that her 2023 taxes had been rejected. We had received the email saying they were rejected but it went to my daughter’s email instead of mine and she never noticed it. So we came to realize that in 2023 her W2 had the wrong social security number. Her employer did a new w2 with the correct social security number for her 2024 taxes and I filed them. Apparently I need to have the 2023 amended with the correct number also. The employer says they cant give her a new w2 for 2023 and instead gave me a W-2c form and said that’s what i need to fill out. I had gone online and tried to start the amend online. Now Im confused as to what exactly I need to do?

Stop. You do not use "amend" to fix her rejected return. Amending is a process you only use for a return that was filed and fully processed. Her rejected return did not ever go to the IRS. So do not click on anything that says "amend" for her 2023 return. You just need to correct the information that was wrong on the 2023 return and then mail it in. E-filing is closed; the return can only be filed by mail now, so she needs to sign and date the return, attach a copy of the W-2, and mail it in.

You will be able to access the 2023 return you started by using the exact same account and user ID that you used when you started it. But you can no longer use online software for any further changes.

Start a 2024 return online and enter some personal information so that the menu on the left opens up and lets you access your past year returns.

Online tax preparation and e-filing for 2023 returns is now permanently closed.

Now it is too late to use online software or to e-file. If you have any changes/corrections at all to make to your 2023 return, you now have to complete it using desktop software, which you must download to a full PC or Mac (not to a mobile device). Then you need to print, sign and mail it.

https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/printers-printing/finish-prior-year-return-started-turbotax-online/L9Oe4M90A_US_en_US?uid=m68tffpe

If you already paid for your online software you can ask customer support for a download of the desktop software.

They are available from 5 a.m. to 9p.m. Pacific time daily

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1899263-what-is-the-turbotax-phone-number

If you are getting a refund, there is no penalty for filing late. If you owe tax due, then file and pay the amount due as shown on the Form 1040, but expect a bill later from the IRS for the penalty and interest you will owe. Only the IRS will calculate this—TurboTax will not calculate it.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

You can't amend the 2023 return because it was never filed. But you can finish the 2023 return (you will need to use the desktop software) and file it by mail. Here is how to do that - How do I finish an unfiled TurboTax return?

When you e-file her 2024 tax return, use zero as her prior year AGI since the 2023 return was not filed.

Use her correct SSN; you have to file a prior year return by mail anyway. Is her correct SSN on the W-2c? You can use the amounts from the original but tell TurboTax it is a corrected form W-2 on the uncommon situations screen.
