Fed extension still not processed; ready to file return

I filed for an extension on both Fed and State (PA) on 4/14/25; made estimated payments to both entities (by EBT) on the same day 4/14/25. Withdrawals were made for both payments by the next day. Problem is - here we are almost a month later and the IRS website still says they have not received my tax return. Under 'Payments' it shows the amount I paid them, but it shows as 'Pending'. The state website basically says the same thing - that as far as they know, I have not yet filed. Is this normal for it to take them so long to process an extension? I've tried calling the IRS number, but there doesn't seem to be a way to get to a live person, and the computer that answers the phone doesn't seem to understand my question, so it basically says it is unable to help me, then hangs up the phone!

Secondly - I am ready to file my returns now, but I'm worried if I file the returns before the extensions go through, would that mess things up somehow? It has been suggested to me from acquaintances to hold off on filing my returns until the extensions go through, but who knows when that will be?

The extension is not your tax return. Go ahead and file your tax return as soon as you can. Don't worry about the extension.

if your extension request susbmission was successful, your Account Transcript statement on your own account at IRS will show that.

If you don't have an Online account, you can ask the IRS to mail the Account Transcript to you.

Can't tell whether the extension submission was successful. They took the money I paid, but as of today in my account history it shows as the extension application is still 'pending'.

Since approval of request is automatic, there would not be a pending status at IRS.

Are you looking at a status from TurboTax?

No, I'm looking at status on IRS website. On the home page it says they have still not received my return (which I would expect to see). But under 'View Payment Activity', 'Pending or Scheduled Payments', they show the following: 'Date': April 15,2025, 'Tax Year': 2024, 'Type': Extension Payment, 'Payment Method': Online Account, 'Amount': $XXXX (the amount I paid on 4/15/25), 'EFT Number': 9999999, 'Action': Pending

It's the 'Pending' that makes no sense. I would think that after a months time it would have been move down to 'Processed Payments'.

If you filed your extension with TurboTax, you should have received a confirmation from TurboTax per the information in this link. If you paper filed your extension forms, the IRS may not have processed the form yet which would account for it not being updated on the IRS website.
