Hi!

Turbotax is telling me I have the Lifetime Learning Credit but I do not qualify and it therefore is not letting me file my taxes.

Also my dad says he cannot claim me as a dependent because I made more then 5,000 dollars last year. Is this true?

If you are in college and under age 24 as a student, your parents can claim you regardless of your income. Once you have aged out, there is an income limit to be a qualifying relative and you have passed the $5,050 mark for TY24.

What do you mean you don't qualify so you can't file. If you don't qualify, it should just not give you the credit and then let you file. Claiming yourself, you may qualify. See IRS LLC.

What is the error message saying? Is this a warning that you can pass and still file or is this actually preventing you from filing?

It was saying that I qualify for the credit and that I had to upgrade. But earlier on it said I didn't qualify and my return doesn't include the tax credit.

I think my dad filed without claiming me though so I put it in as supporting myself which is giving me different tax credits so I no longer see that error.

How much income did you have?

How are you paying for college; parents, scholarships, loans (in you name only or did parents co-sign). It's unlikely that you are self supporting. It's more likely that your parent need to file an amended return to claim you. Is your parent's income too high to claim the ed credit (>$90K, $180K married)?

It is possible for you to get a non-refundable ed credit, if your income is high enough to have a tax liability.
