Sorry, my email responses apparently don't reach you.

Both efile attempts were rejected for lack of IP PIN, code IND-181-01. If I had an IP PIN before those two attempts I was not aware of it.

Of course I meant irs.gov and that was how I got my IP PIN that I was finally able to enter on TurboTax. I also entered the first 5 digits as my signature PIN (not that it makes any difference). With the IP PIN entered my third efile attempt was actually accepted.

As an aside, I have been using TurboTax for many years and have never had so much trouble as I have had this year (2024) with the PIN confusion and with the RMD reporting (where I took distribution from one IRA to cover RMD for another IRA).

Maybe I am getting too old for filing my own taxes but hopefully TurboTax will "correct" those two situations next year.

Thanks for your attention and responses.

Gerr

Under Personal /other tax situations/...TT asks if I received a 6 digit pin from the IRS. Answered yes....But when I reach file in TT it will not accept the 6 digit pin. I also understand that if I have a 6 digit PIN I *MUST* use it. At an impass!!!!

If you have a 6 digit PIN issued to you by the IRS you need to enter it in order to e-file. Go to Federal>Other Tax Situations>Other Return Info>Identity Protection PIN and enter the six-digit PIN.

At the end, there is a 5 digit pin that is used as your signature. Here is where you enter your 6 digit IP Pin:

Here are two ways to navigate to the section to enter the 6 digit IP PIN:

Log in and open your return ("Take me to my return")

Once the return is open, then go to the Federal Taxes tab.

Subtab Other Tax Situations

Scroll down to Other Return Info.

Choose Identity Protection PIN and Start (or Revisit.)

Next screen asks: "Did you or any of your dependents get an IP PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes?"

Or another way:

Open your return if not already open. ("Take me to my return.")

Once the return is open, click at the top on MY ACCOUNT, then choose TOOLS.

In the Tools window choose TOPIC SEARCH.

Enter IP PIN without quotes.

In the selection list highlight IP PIN and click GO.

Next screen asks: "Did you or any of your dependents get an IP PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes?"

The 5 digit pin and the 6 digit pin are completely different.

The 5 digit pin is used as a signature and can be any 5 digits you want.

The 6 digit IP Pin is issued by the IRS.

It's on a page with today's date and your birth date. Like it says there, those 5 digits can be any 5 digits of your choosing (except can't be all zeros.)

If you get another rejection, be sure to post the actual rejection error code.

It's good protection to use every year to help keep someone from using your identity to file a return.

If you are referring to the 6-digit IP PIN, then you will need a new one every year. Please take a look at the following IRS information about how to obtain your IP PIN once you have enrolled to get one.

Get an identity protection PIN (IP PIN)

If you are referring to the 5-digit PIN number used to electronically sign and file your return, there is not a way to retrieve it. You will need to enter your 2024 AGI in order to verify your identity if you do not know the PIN number. If you used TurboTax to file your 2024 return, then the AGI number should be filled in automatically.

See the following TurboTax help article to learn more:

I inputted the 6-digit PIN provided by the IRS in "Other Tax Situations," then proceeded to File {E-file); in the Signature page, TT still allows only 5-digit PIN.

The e-file PIN in the File section of the program is any 5 digits you select. And you must enter the 2024 AGI for your electronic signature.
