The good news is that you only need to amend one of the returns; the IRS will disregard the other separately-filed return when they receive your amendment. How do amend my MFS returns to MFJ?

I did the amendment, now it shows a refund .it is larger than the credit we were trying to get
what about the 2nd persons original return?

how do we adjust if they received a refund ?

The 2nd original return will be erased by this one. You should include the refund that was received on the second return in the amount already received on line 18 of the 1040X. That will subtract it from the new refund amount since you already got it.
