2023 Tax forms

Turbo Tax was not supported on Windows 10 this year so I bought a new computer with Windows 11. Unfortunately my previous returns were unavailable when I began my 2024 filing. What limited information I was able to retrieve lacked Schedule A. Is there any way to recover all of the 2023 forms I need for this year? Turbo Tax really messed me up by not supporting my previous taxes on Windows 10, or possibly, not making a provision for a transfer to Windows 11 on a new computer.

You can try to run the Windows System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files on your old computer to see if that will help.

You can talk to a person at Contact TurboTax Support.

You can go on the IRS website and view your tax records in your Individual Online Account to see your complete 2023 tax return. If you don't have an online account you can set one up by clicking here.

@Keither49 Why did you think you couldn't install Turbo Tax on Windows 10 this year? I did my 2024 return on Windows 10 this year. 2024 Turbo Tax Desktop Download System Requirements
Windows 10 or later or Mac OS Ventura 13 or later (newer).

Did you use the Desktop program last year on your old computer? If you did then the only copy saved was on that computer and any backups you made. You need the file ending in .tax2023 to transfer into 2024. You would have to copy that file from the old computer to the new computer. You always should be able to transfer from the prior year to a new computer (if you have the .taxyyyy file) or from Desktop to Online or Online to Desktop.

Perhaps it's because my old Windows 10 computer would allow the latest update? I don't know. It just didn't allow my Turbo Tax Premier to function as it has in the past. I even gave control to a Turbo Tax helper who searched my computer for the files and he couldn't find the the files you mentioned.

I found the .tax2023 file on a backup hard drive from my old computer. I tried to open it using Adobe Acrobat and got a message that it couldn't be opened either because it is not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).

Now I remember that's what the Turbo Tax advisor had me do. Send a copy to myself from my old computer via email and then open it on my new computer. It didn't work! He had not more solutions for me.

Is it possible to recover the file?

@Keither49 Maybe there's another .tax2023 file on your backup. There might be one that starts with a ~ tilde sign. If you have the .tax2023 file you can copy it on a flash drive to copy to the new computer. Copy it to your Documents, it should go in a Turbo Tax folder under Documents. I would copy the whole Turbo Tax folder to the new computer so you have all the pdf and .tax files incase you need them.

Why did you try opening it in Adobe? It's not a pdf file. You don't open a .tax2023 except in the 2023 Turbo Tax program.

You TRANSFER it into 2024. You start a brand new 2024 tax return and the first thing it should find your .tax2023 file and ask if you want to Transfer it. If it doesn't find the file you can browse to where you saved it.

Thank you again for your help. I couldn't find any .tax2023 on my backup that wasn't already a pdf file and a final copy of my taxes for our records (which lacks Schedule A). The reason I opened the file in Adobe was that was what the Turbo Tax assistant who helped me instructed me to do. In fact, he had me subscribe to Adobe Acrobat for a year so I could do it. I'm just a old fart with little knowledge about these things.

I did try to got to the IRS for my forms but got hung up on the ID.Me identification process. I tried about ten times to validate my ID by sending pictures of my drivers license and passport but kept getting an error message. I finally got linked to their help line and put in a request but they never answered back--even though they said they'd be with me "soon".

I'm about worn out. At least you've been very generous with your time. For that I'm thankful.

Did you have a TurboTax folder on your back-up drive? You can transfer in a PDF copy of your return. It doesn't capture as much information as the tax file does, but it does work. PDF vs .tax2023 files

Thank you for the additional help. All the PDF files are the finalized tax version after filing and lack Schedule A.

if I don’t hear from the ID. Me people by tomorrow I will request mailed copy from the IRS.
