If the Social Security benefits is the Only income to be reported on the tax return and there is no federal income taxes being withheld, then there is no reason or need to file a tax return.

If you only get ssi or SS or SSDI or SSA-1099 it is not taxable and you do not have to file a return. Oh, but you do need to file if you get a 1095A for having Marketplace health ins or to get back any withholding taken out.

If you still want to efile a return you can add $1 of interest. It won't affect your return. Enter a fake 1099Int for $1.

Did you get a SSA-1099? That is for Social Security or Social Security Disability not ssi. ssi stands for supplemental security income. It is different than SS. You don't get a SSA-1099 for ssi and you do not report ssi on your tax return.

If Social Security has been your only income for 2024, you do not have to file a tax return unless you have a 1095A for marketplace health insurance. If you have been receiving Social Security they mailed you a SSA1099 in January. If you get SSI----which is not the same as Social Security---there is no tax document and nothing to file.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS AND SSI?

GET SSA1099

Who has to file?

In general, SSI Disability (SSDI) payments are not taxable, but some exceptions apply. These are listed below. You indicated that you have no other earned income, so in your case your SSDI benefits would not be taxed. You will not have to file a tax return if this is the case, unless you have other items you need to report. Such as Xmasbaby0 and VolvoGirl mentioned above: if you have a Form 1095-A for Marketplace Health Insurance to report.

In some circumstances, your Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits may be taxable:

if you have received income from other sources, such as dividends or tax-exempt interest, or if you are married and your spouse earns income.

If you are married and file a joint tax return, you can report up to $32,000 of income (made up of half of your SSDI benefits plus all of your other income) before owing taxes on your SSDI benefits.

If you are Single, Head of Household, Qualifying Surviving Spouse, or Married Filing Separately (didn't live with spouse), you can report up to $25,000 of income (half of your SSDI benefits plus all other income) before owing taxes on your SSDI benefits.

If you’re Married Filing Separately but lived with your spouse at any time during the tax year, none of your income is exempt from taxation.

You should receive a form SSA-1099 for your social security benefits. If you didn’t receive the form you can get a replacement Form SSA-1099 by going online to your personal "My Social Security account". You will be able to download the form from your account.

If you do not have access to the internet you can use the Social Security Administrations automated phone services to request a replacement SSA-1099. Their automated services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by calling 1-800-772-1213. You will say "1099" after you hear “How can I help you today? to get help with your form.

You can keep your Form SSA-1099 with your tax records if you do not have to file a tax return.

Click here for "Is Social Security Disability Income Taxable?"
