topic Rejected Tax Return, 1095-A Fraud in Get your taxes done using TurboTax

My tax return was rejected this morning, stating that I needed to file a form 8962, using data from form 1095-A. I found this odd, as I am employed and have health coverage and have received a 1095–C. I reached out to the ACA marketplace and come to find out someone fraudulently applied for benefits last year under all my credentials, and I’m just finding out about this now. The marketplace started an investigation and claim process, however, it can take up to 45 days to resolve and get a voided 1095-A form back to submit to e-file, which is past tax deadline. I also reached out to the IRS and they advised the best thing to do would be to submit a paper return in the mail with the ACA explanation detailing all of this. My question, is there a way to submit the ACA explanation on TurboTax online through e-file? I’ve already paid for TurboTax so it seems like a waste of money that I can’t use it at this point. Are there any other options? Hate this stuff happens in our country so often.

Try the steps below first. If it gets rejected again, switch to file by mail, or you can file an extension and wait to e-file, later. But the steps below should work.

Your return may have been rejected if the IRS has information that someone in your household should have a 1095-A.

If you don't have a Form 1095-A and know you won't be receiving one, you can certify this in TurboTax Online/Mobile in order to refile your return:

Go to the Did you receive Form 1095-A for your health insurance plan? screen.

You'll be asked if you received a 1095-A. Select No. By selecting this certification, you will be able to e-file your return and meet the requirements under rejected code F8962-070.

Select File from the left menu and continue through the process to resubmit your return.

Well they used my name and social to apply for benefits fraudulently, so it seems like there is a 1095A form in my name, but there should not be. Should I still try the steps you suggested before sending by mail with my ACA explanation?

Mine was rejected not due to fraud but a matter that I thought would be resolved following the walk through Tueno Tax provides in cases like this. However when it was resubmitted, I received another note that identity needed to be made & also the matter of matching PIN. Another option is to mail in the returns. I paid the fee for e-filing too. Live assistance also paid for but only good during work days. I'm,m prepared to mail in as well & that may be the only option. The bureaucracy is maddening & errors....

@Elmo81

When you use TurboTax you do not pay an extra fee to e-file. The fee is the same whether you e-file or file your return by mailing it in an envelope. The only extra e-file fee --- ever --- is the state e-file fee if you used desktop download software.

If it is asking for your 6 digit PIN

If you have a 6 digit PIN issued to you by the IRS you need to enter it in order to e-file. Go to Federal>Other Tax Situations>Other Return Info>Identity Protection PIN and enter the six-digit PIN.

https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/retrieve-your-ip-pin

If the problem is your AGI:

Where do I find my AGI?

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/agi/help/how-do-i-find-last-year-s-agi/01/25947

Your 2023 tax return shows your 2023 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) If you filed a joint return then the AGI is the same for each of you.

Form 1040 line 11

If entering the amount from your 2023 tax return does not work, then try entering “0” instead. If that does not work and you still cannot e-file, then print, sign, and mail your tax return.

You can get a free transcript of your past return from the IRS:

https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

Note: If you filed late or amended your return, your correct 2023 AGI may not be in the system.

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1944348-how-do-i-print-and-mail-my-return-in-turbotax-online

Note: If you mail your federal return, you will also need to mail your state return. You will not be able to e-file your state return.

Curious if this ever got resolved? We’re in basically the same boat- an agent fraudulently submitted an application on marketplace for us, lied about our income, and we got a 1095a, and our filing is saying we owe money. We’ve filed the fraud complaint with marketplace and everything but just curious what came of the situation for you? How did it resolve? And were you able to submit your taxes?

You will need to wait until the Marketplace investigation is complete. This process can take up to 45 days, after which you should receive a voided 1095-A and be able to file your return.

If you are unable to wait or are concerned about meeting the filing deadline, you have the option to print and mail your tax return to the IRS. However, be aware that the IRS may take up to 8 weeks to process paper returns.

Given the time frames, waiting for the Marketplace investigation to conclude is the recommended course of action.

Yes, we got it sorted. We filed the dispute, provided additional documentation, and it took about a month to clear. Once it cleared we received a voided form, and I was able to resubmit the tax return it was approved quickly. It was a pain in the butt, and took a lot of time, but keep fighting, unfortunately it's very common! I would just keep calling the marketplace contact however, different reps gave me different information, keep calling and following up, they can continue to put notes on your account.

Is the 1095A voided or corrected? If it's voided, you don't want to include anything about a 1095-A in your return, but if it's corrected, you want to include the corrected 1095-A with 0's. Are you sure you don't have a new reason for your return being rejected?

Also it’s the same reason code. Rule Number: F8962-070
Rule Number Description: The IRS is expecting Form 1095-A and Form 8962 to be included with your return. You would have received Form 1095-A if your health insurance was obtained through a Marketplace.

I wouldn't think it would take much time, at least that's what I've heard from others. I would give it a couple days. Have you checked for 1095-A's for every person on your return? I wonder if there is more than one.

Yes, healthcare.gov issues a new 1095a that said it was voided. So I went to file my taxes again and it allows you up upload the voided 1095a form. It finally got accepted Wednesday but not approved yet.

Also you have to get assertive with them because that’s what I did. I had been calling them since the beginning of February. Finally receive the new one on 3/6/26. Did they have you create an account on healthcare.gov? That’s what I did and the document was there.
