You have to wait a little while. The program just came out because people want to start early. It is a very early version and won’t be fully ready until mid January. The IRS hasn’t even approved all the forms yet for Turbo Tax to use. There will be many updates. They usually update on Thursdays. If your program doesn’t automatically update you can try updating by going up to menu item Online - Check for Updates.

This is low hanging fruit - easy stuff for Intuit to change. This does not involve waiting on the Federal Govt. Just updating the new 2024 limits. I understand waiting on forms that have not been released by the federal govt. but this is totally different. These limits have been posted for quite some time and would be a simple to update in the software. Disappointing. It looks like Intuit didn't do anything. I could just open up TurboTax 2023 and run my prelim taxes. Hmmm.... now that I think of it maybe that's the approach I need to take since the depreciation isn't even available. I'm quite limited.

This has not been fixed in the online versions either. Couldn't figure out why I was being taxed for our tIRA contributions prior to backdoor Roths. Played around with numbers, saw they were still using the old $7,500 (over 50) limit. Just posted myself, hoping someone from Intuit takes a notice.

Are you referring only to an IRA issue? This thread was about HSAs.

It is generally a good idea to start a new thread, especially when you are changing the subject.

Be sure that your program is up to date by going to Online > Check for Updates at the top of the screen.

Checking a test case using TurboTax desktop Home and Business version showed that $8300 could be contributed to a Health Savings Account (HSA) if covered by a Family HDHP all year.

If you are still having a problem with the HSA limit, consider sharing a diagnostic copy of your tax data file for someone to take a closer look. The diagnostic file will not contain personally identifiable information, only numbers related to your tax forms.

If you would like to provide us with the diagnostic file, follow the instructions below and post the token number along with which version of TurboTax you are using and what states you are filing in a follow-up thread.

If you are using a CD/downloaded version of TurboTax, use these steps:

Select Online at the top of the screen.

Select Send Tax File to Agent.

Click OK.

Post the token number here.

Harish161019

I just checked - the version you are using is the same as mine (024.000.0317), meaning that your software is up to date.

Furthermore, when I open your sanitized tax return, the HSA contribution limit is $8,300, like it is supposed to be.

So let's start over. Where do you see that the annual HSA contribution limit for Family HDHP coverage is not $8,300? Perhaps we are talking about two different things.

@Harish161019

It is below the limit of $8300.

But after going through HSA review for both software says we contributed $450 excess. I am not sure why ?

Ah, so you don't see a lower HSA contribution limit. Look at form 8889 on line 3. Does it say $8,300?

What is in line 2 on the 8889? Is it a number like $450? This is the amount of carryover of excess contributions from a previous year. Or if the $4,500 was contributed directly to your HSA (not through your employer), then maybe the number is $4,950 ($4,500 plus $450).

So although you think that you did not contribute it, it was carried over from a previous year and treated as a personal contribution (i.e., line 2).

Is this is not it, come back and we'll talk about it some more. But be assured that your software is up to date.

I am putting in my numbers and my wife did not contribute but since we both had High deductible health plans i should be able to contribute the whole amount. I contributed 5500 for both of us but it is saying i contributed to much. The limit should be over 7K.

Please tell us what your HDHP coverage was, for how many months, and the same for your spouse.

Do each of you have HSAs or just one of you?

How did you contribute the $5,500? Through an employer or directly to one of your HSAs?

Hmmmn, I just had a thought. Did you both have Self-only coverage? But in the HSA interview, you said that your spouse did not contribute...that would mean that you put all of it into your HSA. But if you had Self-only coverage, your limit was only $4,300 unless you are 55+ in which case, your limit would be $5,300.

Is this what is happening to you?

I agree. I contribute for both me and my wife. We both have separate HD health plans and the limit is over 7000. Turbo tax is telling me I am over the limit and does not consider that I am making the contribution for both of us. IRS allows you to split the amounts between yourselves as long and the combined amount does not go over the family limit. Turbo Tax didn't get the memo.

Do each of you have HSAs or just one of you? Just me, but we both are eligible.

How did you contribute the $5,500? Through an employer or directly to one of your HSAs? Employer

Did you both have Self-only coverage? Yes.

I am over 55+

The family contribution limit is $8,550. So why are they trying to tax me on 250 of the 5500?

Thanks.

Yes, the Family HSA contribution limit is $8,550 in 2025, but that's only for a FAMILY HDHP policy. You don't have a Family HDHP policy, you have Self only policies. The 2025 contribution limit for Self-only is $4,300, and since only one of you has an HSA, that $4,300 is the limit (plus, of course, the $1,000 for being 55+).

Indeed, if your spouse had had an HSA, then your spouse could have also had a limit of $4,300, so that you would have an aggregate total limit of $8,600, but you would have to divide the contributions so that no more than $4,300 would go to one HSA (plus $1,000 for each HSA if your spouse if also 55+).

I would urge you to visit with your HR departments to determine if for 2026 you want to actually have a Family HDHP policy or two separate Self-only policies. NOTE: one of you can have a Family HDHP policy and the other a Self-only policy, but the total contribution limit do not add up - instead, the two spouses would share the $8,550 Family contribution limit.

I would also urge your spouse to get his/her own HSA - HSAs are somewhat IRAs, they belong to the individual, not the family. If each of you are 55+ and each of you have HSAs, then each of you can contribute an extra $1,000 to your HSA.
