      <description>&lt;P&gt;To be honest, the IRS instructions for those lines are so arcane, it's hard to tell if you did it right or wrong.&lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;
&lt;P&gt;If the entry in line 5b is correct, I would not worry about line 5a. I don't think the IRS does. Seriously.&lt;/P&gt;</description>

      <description>&lt;P&gt;Thanks for the reply.&amp;nbsp; I asked the question because without some adjustment the fully-taxable amounts do transfer to Line 5a.&amp;nbsp; To exclude them I created a dummy 1099-R with a negative number in Box 1 equal to the sum of the fully-taxable amounts in my 1099-Rs, and linked the dummy 1099 to Line 5a.&amp;nbsp; It worked, and I too suspected that the IRS wouldn't care, as the 1040 is correct. I asked the question in case there was a more elegant way to make the adjustment baked into TurboTax.&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;However, it would be nice if next year TurboTax would have the more elegant solution.&amp;nbsp; Again, thanks.&lt;/P&gt;</description>
