I am married and live in a Community Property state. While I know it would be generally better to file MFJ, the arcane and bizarre Income Dependent Repayment (IDR) provisions for federal student loan repayment penalize you for filing jointly.

Up until last year when I bought TT from Costco and it came on a CD-ROM, the step-by-step process included steps for dividing up my and my wife's W-2 income, etc. Then it flowed to final MFS returns. If the 2024 non-CD desktop program still does that, I can't find it.

Hitting the SEARCH button next to the magnifying glass opens a "Help" window that says "Connecting you to Digital Assistant..." then just churns and churns and churns.

If the 2024 non-CD desktop program still has a step-by-step way to divide up income, etc., how do I access it?

To access the Community Property Allocation form, if your Search function isn't working, switch to Forms Mode by clicking on "Forms" in the upper right of your screen. On the left, just above "Forms in My Return", click on "Open Form". Type in "Community Property". You should see "Form 8958 : Allocation of Community Property Amounts" at the top of the list. Click on it to highlight it and then click on "Open Form" or double click on it to open it.

Thanks @DavidD66. But accessing and filling out Form 8958 doesn't alter the return.

I ended up uninstalling TT, and reinstalling it. The step-by-step search function then worked. After which I was able to find the community property step, make the necessary adjustments, and file our MFS returns.

TT is still pretty much all DIY when it comes to MFS, but it can be forced to work.
