I know that income is taxable in both states. But when I compared the Turbo tax liability in Maryland to the Maryland ifile system, the Maryland Turbo tax return results in a liability that exceeds the ifile Maryland version by the amount of the Colorado liability. I completed both CO and MD in turbo tax. It doesn't look like the proper 502 CR for MD is being created in Turbo Tax. Thanks!

As a resident of Maryland, all you income is taxable in Maryland. You will receive a credit for taxes paid to another state.

To ensure accurate calculations of the credit for taxes paid to another state, always complete the non-resident return first..

How do I file a nonresident state return?

If the credit for the Colorado return is not being carried over then you should delete the Maryland return, check the Colorado return, and then re-add the Maryland return.

actually, my liability in Turbo Tax for MD was $105 more than in Ifile. My CO liability was $304; iFile calculates a total credit of $409. Turbo Tax just includes the $304 credit. Please help me resolve this. It is taking hours of my time. Thank you!

When you go through the MD return, look for a page titled Take a look at Maryland credits. Scroll down to Other Credits. The first entry is Credit for Taxes Paid to Another State. If you already went through that section, the credit will be at the top of the page.

If the CO liability is 304, the credit for that (taxes paid to another state) can't be more than 304.

This means the return using ifile is picking up (at least one) credit for 105.

Can you tell if the ifile return has a credit that is missing on the TurboTax return? Something OTHER THAN credit for taxes paid to another state.

sorry for the confusion, what I meant to say is that there is an $105 overage in Turbo tax over I file.

It's important to review each tax return line by line to understand any difference. The bottom line is that TurboTax will calculate and apply the credit for taxes paid to another state on the same income for your resident state.

All worldwide income must be included on your Maryland (MD) resident return.

Credit for taxes paid to another state on the same income is a maximum of what your tax would have been in MD even if CO is higher.

Only the Colorado (CO) income should be taxed on CO return.

You have access to all forms when you choose to print your return in TurboTax Online/Mobile. However you are required to pay before printing, but do not have to file until you are ready.

Can I print a copy of my return in TurboTax Online before filing?

If you are using TurboTax Desktop you can switch to Forms and review all forms and worksheets.

@barbara541
