Thank you. We are both living in Germany and are not planning to return to the US soon. Do I still need to submit a W-7? Also, do I have to include all of my W-2s and other income documents when I file by mail? I usually e-file and have not had to print anything out.

If you wish to file jointly, you have to elect to treat your nonresident spouse as a US resident for tax purposes.

Please read this IRS document.

If you make this election, you have to file form W-7 for an ITIN for your spouse with your joint tax return.

Please read this IRS document.

When you file by mail, you have to include all tax documents such as forms W-2 or 1099, which list a federal tax withholding.
