Hi!

So I received a 1099-NEC from a client and it lists the state abbreviation (no number) in Box 6 but it keeps saying error for the state number which isn't listed on the 1099. I've left Box 4 and 5 blank as I've read you're not suppose to put 0. I asked the client if they could provide the state number but they said they've never had to provide it before. I do have info in box 7 though. Would love to know how to fix this so I can file my taxes. Thanks in advance!

If you do not have a federal EIN in box Payer's TIN then you should not enter the 1099-NEC and just enter the income in your self employment schedule under income type Other.

Search for schedule c > Press enter > click the Jump to... link in the search results

In this case delete the 1099-NEC.

I have this situation currently. Did you end up entering the FED TIN for the payer if you had 1 listed at top of NEC form or did you delete the NEC because you didn't have a FED TIN to enter? I'm curious to know which of his advice worked for you.

Can you please clarify your situation?

It seems you have a 1099-NEC, please tell us the error the program is showing you.

Is there anything listed in Boxes 5,6 or 7?

If yes, what is listed?

If no, are you not able to leave those boxes blank when entering into the TurboTax program?

Are you importing the form or typing it in?

Which TurboTax program are you using, Online or Desktop?

What do you mean by "two state lines"?

Yes, it means the source is FL - but Florida doesn't have income tax, so entering it will just confuse the program. You are correct to leave those all those boxes blank. @1597980

This solution didn't work for me. After putting in the Payer TIN without a hyphen it is still saying I need to enter an amount in for 4. I tried putting in zero even though you're not supposed to, but even then entry still say "needs review"

Boxes 5, 6, and 7 on Form 1099-NEC (both the version released in December 2025 and the draft version for 2026) are related fields regarding the state and need to be entered consistently or not at all.

Box 4 shows the Federal income tax withholding. If there was no Federal withholding shown on the form, leave it blank.

Please clarify your issue if different.

If the program seems to be caught in a loop, try these steps:

Clear your browser cache and cookies

Log out of TurboTax

Restart your device

Log back in

@watusi
