Does my adult son with special needs have to file a tax return?

My son is 24. He has autism and is on the Intellectual Disability waiver. He receives SSI. (he lives with us full time and got about $4000 in SSI). He made $13,000 in a part time job this year. He had a job coach for part of the time.

My question is: Is he required to file a tax return? Is there any benefit to him to file?

He would have to file a tax return if his taxable income was $14,600 or more in 2024.

Up to 85% of Social Security Retirement/Disability/Survivors benefits becomes taxable when all your other income plus 1/2 your social security reaches:

Married Filing Jointly - $32,000
Single or Head of Household - $25,000
Married Filing Separately - 0

If you claim your son as a dependent, he would not need to file his own return if his only income was the SSDI and earned income from his part time job of $13,000. If any taxes were withheld from his income (W2 Box 2) he can have that refunded if he files a tax return. State requirements may be different.
