It is not unusual for your return to stay in pending status for several days sometimes longer depending on the back log of returns filed and time it takes for the IRS to process them. Keep checking the IRS Where’s My Refund? site for updates. The tool is updated daily (usually in the overnight hours) so you don’t need to check more often. Except it IS an uncommon situation. Both representatives I spoke with on the phone yesterday said it was. The IRS has not even gotten my efile. It is stuck in limbo and nobody can tell me where my return is.

Did you get an email saying your return was on hold?

Do any of these situations apply to you?

You've used TurboTax in the past and are using a different account this year. This can including moving from our Desktop product to our Online product.
You changed your filing status from last year, and for that reason, are filing with a different TurboTax account this year.
You've created multiple TurboTax accounts this year or in prior years.

There could be a couple or reasons why you might be experiencing a delay;

1. First, the status might be pending for security reasons. This may be a sign that someone is trying to use your identity to file a tax return. The return has been placed on hold to give you an opportunity to cancel it if it doesn't belong to you. This can take up to 72 hours, after which your return will then be forwarded to the IRS, or if applicable, rejected. If rejected, you can then correct the rejection issue and resubmit. Please see this FAQ for reference.

2. Secondly, there could be a delay if your return has various refundable credits, such as the Earned Income Credit.

Note: Both instances may be applicable. That is, you could have a hold for security reasons first. And additionally for verification of the refundable credits in your return. In this case, delays might extend beyond 72 hours.

We filed on 1/23/25 (early) and we did use a new account. We normally file with my account, but this year made an account for my husband and filed using his so that he would be listed first. I had already gotten the email to verify that it was me sending the return, we called and verified within 10 minutes of getting the email (1/23/25)

on 1/27/25 (opening day) we were rejected ( i made a typo on one of my kids socials) fixed it, resent it, I never received the email asking if it was me who filed but i called the number from the email again to verify it again, I am now sitting 20 minutes away from being 72 hours stuck on pending with the irs having to receipt of my return at all. The rejection isnt even on my irs transcripts. Like I never filed a return. We have used turbotax for the last 9 years and i have NEVER encountered this, even on past rejections it would be either rejected or accepted within a few hours. I am mildly panicking and am questioning continuing to use tt in the years to come.

Can you check your status at the end of the day today and if it hasn't processed, let us know? We need to be a bit past that 72 hour window before we can investigate further.

Mine has also been over 72hrs and in previous years it has always been accepted in 24hrs or less.

Same with me. I filed 1/27 and irs is saying they have not received mine. This same thing happened last years with TurboTax and I didn’t get my refund for 5 months

Exactly! Mine is the same. Filed on 1/24, still pending, nobody can figure out why after hours on the phone with TurboTax multiple different times there is no reason for it. The IRS says they don't have it.

Experts from TurboTax spent two hours yesterday looking through my submission and neither of your responses are what is holding it up.

So these recorded replies that you respond with are really useless. The issue has nothing to do with the return or refund it has everything to do with how you submitted it to the IRS. I will never use your company again.

Same. Last year my tax return was in limbo with them for months and I didn’t get my refund for five months. I was hesitant about using TurboTax again, but I figured I wouldn’t have the same issue. But here we are five days after I filed my taxes and I still haven’t been accepted. I won’t be using them again after this year either.

I am also having the same issue. I filed my taxes on 01/27/2025 and it has stayed in pending since then. It was neither rejected nor accepted. The irs where is my refund has no record of it. I reached out to TT agent and they are confused about it. It has been more than 72 hours. This is frustrating. Please get this fixed. I have used turbo tax for the past 5 years. I am going to try to use HR block and file there instead

Same thing with me. Turbo tax representative has no idea but my return seems to be in limbo as well and she said she has had many calls of the same situation for other people...Did yours ever get accepted?

The representative I talked to told me to file with a different company because the IRS will just take the first one they receive...after reading this I think that's what I'm going to try...I'll let you know how it goes
