If my employer put my middle name as my last name on my w-2 but said they were going to fix it can I file my tax return with the correct info before I get the other w-2 from them

Yes. If you name is wrong on your W2 it will not affect your ability to file a return. Ensure your social security number is correct on the W2.

So do I put what they have on the w-2 for my name even though it’s incorrect and if I file that way it won’t have to be amended ?

Sorry for so many questions but they said they were going to correct my name on it and send me a new one so just wondering to I put my correct name on the return for that w-2

@chandler1004 Enter the name as reported on the W-2 you received from the employer on the TurboTax W-2 form. As stated - the name on the W-2 and the name on your tax return do not have to match, only the Social Security numbers have to be the same.

If the employer is going to send you a corrected W-2 than wait for that W-2C and enter it as a Corrected W-2 in TurboTax.

ok so when I get the new one do I file just as a w-2 or does it have to be filed as a different form

Just enter it as the new one and do not enter the old one with the incorrect name.

After completing entry of the W-2 you will be on a screen labeled Let's check for uncommon situations

On that screen check the box labeled W-2 was corrected by my employer (Form W-2c)
