Hello!

I received two W-2 forms from the same employer. One is for Kansas (KS), where I live, and the other is for Missouri (MO), where I worked for one month. The Kansas W-2 has all the fields filled out, including federal and state information. The Missouri W-2, however, only has boxes 15–20 filled out, with box 15 listing MO and box 20 listing KS. Boxes 1–13 are blank on the Missouri W-2, and box 14 says, 'FED W-2 DATA IS ON SEPARATE W-2.'

When filing my taxes, should I enter these W-2 forms separately (one for each state), or should I combine the information into a single entry while creating additional tabs for the state-specific details?

TIA!

If the EIN number in box b is the same and you work in more than 1 state or city, sometimes they will give you another W2 with the extra state information on it and the top part the same or not filled in. If this is the case, list one W-2 but include both state or local taxes on it. It will let you type in more than one line for boxes 15-20. Don't add the boxes together.

Thank you so much! Yes, the EIN in box B is the same on both W-2 forms (different employer state ID no though if that makes any difference). I followed the process you described using both TurboTax and FreeTaxUSA to compare the results, but I noticed a discrepancy in the Missouri refund amount. Box 17 on the Missouri W-2 shows $350 withheld. TurboTax calculates the MO state tax refund as approximately $110, while FreeTaxUSA says the entire $350 (equals to box 17!) should be refunded. Could you help me understand why there’s such a difference?
