if she is permanently and totally disabled at any time during the year for purposes of the gross income test don't include Social Security benefits unless she is married filing a separate return and lived with their spouse at any time during the tax year or if 1/2 of their Social Security benefits plus their other gross income and tax-exempt interest is more than $25,000 ($32,000 if MFJ)

Please check your tax return to see if you actually claimed your sister. If so, you would see her listed on page 1 as a dependent. On page 2, line 19, you would see an Other Dependent Credit of $500. If you see her listed as a dependent with the credit, you are fine. However, if she is not listed, as I suspect - since you marked income over the limit, then you can choose to amend your tax return(s) and claim her.

Once your original return is accepted and the finances are settled, you can file an amended return.

Save a copy of the original return before doing an amended return.

See:

how to file an amended return. - have to scroll down and open for your software type to see current year information.

I need to amend my state return.

Can I e-file my amended state return?

Can I e-file my 1040X to amend my return?

Track amended return status online. Taxpayers can track the status of their amended tax return in English and Spanish using Where’s My Amended Return? Amended returns take up to 16 weeks to process and up to three weeks from the date of mailing to show up in the system.

Mail forms with tracking to ensure your privacy is protected and the documents safely reach their destination.
