Does the basic allow you to complete state returns and e-file for the extra $25 or do I actually have to go up to premiere for that?

Desktop download Basic does not include a state program. It will cost you at least an extra $40 to purchase the state download separately if you already bought Basic. If you need to prepare a state return, get Deluxe or higher that includes a state program. Be careful---retailers sell Deluxe both with and without the state download. With desktop software there is an extra fee to e-file the state----before March 1 it is $20 to e-file state; it increases to $25 on March 1. You can avoid the state e-file fee if you print and mail the state.

The pricing is difficult.

With Basic, no state module is included, you will have to buy a state module for about $40. Then, you may have to pay an additional $20-$25 to e-file the state return (unless you live in New York). (I am always confused about whether you have to pay the $25 if you already paid the $40, but I think you do.)

If you buy Deluxe+1 Free State, you get Deluxe plus one state module for the included price. E-filing the state is another $20-$25.
