I received a notice from the CA Franchise Tax Board that I owe $1,881 because it says I put this number into line 72 of my form 540. I used turbotax to file and found out this auto populates on there so how can I find out what went wrong and how to remedy this issue?

Did you make any CA estimated payments or apply a 2022 refund to 2023? Turbo Tax does not auto fill line 72. You had to enter that amount somewhere on the federal side. Was that the amount of your 2022 state refund? Did you enter a 1099G for a state refund? After you entered a state refund it probably asked if you applied it. You should have said No.

CA 540 Line 72 can come from Estimated payments, amount applied from last year’s refund and payment with an extension to file. See CA 540 instructions page 16 for line 72

https://www.ftb.ca.gov/forms/2023/2023-540-booklet.pdf
