topic W-2 & 1099 together? in Get your taxes done using TurboTax

This year I worked as a self-employed contractor until I got hired as a salary employee in Sept.

As a self-employed man, I contributed 25% of my income to SEP IRA. I also contributed $8,000 to ROTH IRA early this year because I'm over 60. I think I'll receive both 1099 (as a contractor), and W-2 (as a salary employee) next January. In my case, should I file tax returns both as a contractor and an employee? I am confused because I've never worked both as a self-employed man and a salaried employee at the same time.

It is not unusual for someone to have both W-2 and self employment income and you can contribute to both a SEP and an IRA.

For self-employed individuals, the calculation is a bit more involved because the contribution itself reduces net earnings. Often, people use an effective rate of about 20% of net self-employment. TurboTax can calculate that for you.

ALL of your income will go on the same tax return---including the W-2 income and the self-employment income. Your situation is not at all unusual. In fact it is very common and can easily be handled by TurboTax.

If you have self-employment income for which you will pay self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare, you will need to use online Premium software or any version of the CD/download so that you can prepare a Schedule C for your business expenses.
