I work in NJ and live in NY and made sure to complete my non-resident state (NJ) first and then NY but it’s saying that the tax amount can’t be greater than the tax imposed by other state. I entered all totals exactly as they were on my w-2. How can I fix this?

The credit for taxes paid to another state is based on the actual tax liability shown on your non-resident tax return. The information that needs to be entered on the IT-112-R will not be found on your W2.

The amount you need to enter on line 24(a) of your IT-112-R is the total amount of tax liability calculated on your New Jersey tax return (located on line 49 on your Form NJ-1040NR.) Since you've already prepared your New Jersey non-resident return, review the entries on that return, including the summary at the end that shows what your total New Jersey tax liability was. For example, the end of the nonresident return will have a summary screen that shows something along the lines of New Jersey tax of $2202, with New Jersey withholding of $2212, and resulting in a refund of $9.

So using your example, I would enter $2,202 in box 24a?

Also, when I try to click review/edit on the state taxes, it jumps right to reviewing my whole return so I can’t see that summary page you’re referring to. How would I get back to that section?

Correct. Based on my example, the $2202 is the nonresident state tax liability.
Obviously, you will want to use whatever the number is from your actual return.

You may have to review the New Jersey return by going through all the state entries, item by item. You won't be changing anything, just using it as a way to access the final state results. There is generally a summary screen right before the final error check for each state.
