Alternatively, Do can I use the second license code to do a second return with it's free state?
We are completing our 2023 (extension) taxes so I got two copies at a great price.....

There is a way to have 2 licenses. Under Help - Switch Product - Activate new product. Don't know what that will do or what benefit you will get. Don't think it will allow you to efile more than 5. Or give you a different free state program.

You can only install one copy of the TurboTax desktop editions on a personal tax return for the same tax year.

Using the TurboTax desktop edition you can create, complete and file as many tax returns as you want. The one free state download can be used across all the tax returns at no charge. However if you need a different state other than the free state that was downloaded you would need to purchase that second state.

UPDATE!!!

So, I completed and filed my girlfriend's taxes.

With her taxes completed I signed out of her Windows 10 user account and signed into my own Windows 10 user account. I clicked on TurboTax to start it up and it asked me to activate my copy.

Voila! You can run two different instances of TurboTax, provided you have a separate Windows User Account!
