If i have 2 children and am a single dad, is it best to put them down as a dependant or no?

Thank you for the question. The general answer is that you should be claiming both as a dependents in Step 3 depending upon their ages. From your question I am assuming you are the custodial parent. The custodial parent is the parent with whom the child lived for the greater number of nights during the year. The other parent is the non-custodial parent. If this is not the case you would not want to be claiming them as dependents on the W-4.
