My spouse died in 2022 and now I’m filing single. I have received a 1099C in their name but also received a 1098 addressed to “Estate of” and this is confusing. I did not receive a 1099-S because the estate was not of that value and no estate return was needed. What do I do with these tax documents? I can’t file joint anymore because it’s been over one year.

The 1099-C - if it is dated for 2023 and issued to your husband's social security number - can be ignored. So can the 1098 if it has his social security number on it. However, the 1098 probably has mortgage interest and property taxes for you. You will want to contact the mortgage company and have them issue the 1098s to you going forward.

Sorry for your loss.

Thank you so much. I sold the house and closed in 2023. I haven’t received any further documents and because of all the transition this is the first time I owe taxes (smh). Super confused 😕
