The following information is the text for an error message generated by TurboTax when an input has been made for Form 8911:

The IRS made updates to Form 8911 Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit. TurboTax is planning to make updates around this by 02/21/2024. Please check back then to be sure you are eligible to receive this credit.

The error condition is to insure that you do not file the tax return before the updates are made in the program.

Today is 2/21/2024 and I'm still getting this error during review. My taxes are ready to submit except for this error. Is there a new date for an update to correct form 8911?

The IRS recently clarified changes to Form 8911 Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit. TurboTax is planning to make updates around this by February 29, 2024.

This is crazy how long Turbo Tax is taking to complete this. Looking at when the IRS last updated the form it was November 2023. The dates have slipped from 2/21 to 2/28 and now to 3/2/24. I'm very unhappy waiting for this ONE form to file and get my rebate.

The date on Form 8911 on the IRS site (https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8911.pdf) says Rev 1-2024. So, there has been an update this year. But, I agree that this is taking a ridiculous amount of time. I Just can't believe it's that hard to incorporate the changes into TurboTax.

Because I purchased an EV, I'm expecting a large refund. TurboTax is standing in my way.

And it seems to slip daily, Now it's 3/4/24 The IRS has finalized this form, and there is zero reason for TT to take so long to incorporate the changes.

I've been using TT since the early 1990's, this may be the last year I use it. This is getting ridiculous.

It appears that the IRS has screwed this up. The instructions for form 8911 say that the "Property must be located in an eligible census tract". And the worksheet gives URLs to determine whether the address of the charging station is in an eligible tract. But the links to "Notice 2024-20" (appendices to which specify which tracts are eligible) do not work! They give "Page Not Found" errors.

If that is the issue that TurboTax is dealing with, they should be working with (PUSHING?) the IRS to get correct links; and then to update their software to complete the worksheet.

Yes, the links are now working for me.

All of that frustration is for Part II of the form, which deals with Business/Investment use of Refueling Property. I installed a charger for personal use. My tax return shouldn't be held up for this. The form 8911 looks like it is filled in correctly for the "Personal Use" part. Is there a way to bypass this warning and submit my taxes?

I’ve been tempted to submit mine. I think you can always opt to bypass the warning & plow forward. You just risk TurboTax not backing you up if you get audited.

The frustrating part of it getting pushed out a day at a time is that, at any one point, I’m like… it’s only two days away. But it’s always now a week away and it keeps moving.

When I looked at the IRS form it was not obvious that the geocode locations were _only_ for business applications. I understood that that was the intent, but I couldn’t find anything that made that clear. Reading the instructions for the form where it described getting the geocode for where it was installed I did not see ANYWHERE the IRS said “unless this is for personal use”. If they said that I’d have filed mine weeks ago.

TurboTax is aware of issues with the Energy Credit and is working with Developers to resolve the issues. The IRS made updates to Form 8911 Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit. TurboTax is planning to make updates around this by 03/02/2024. Please check back then to be sure you are eligible to receive this credit.

My understanding was that a charging station installed in your home, and used only for personal use, would qualify regardless of location. Was I wrong? As a "Tax Expert", can you comment?

Looks like the 8911 has been updated in the latest TurboTax software update as of today! I have successfully submitted my returns.

The IRS Instructions for Form 8911 have two specific lines regarding location of the property:

[Must be used] to recharge an electric vehicle, but only if the recharging property is located at the point where the vehicle is recharged.
The property must be located in an eligible census tract [11-digit census tract GEOID].

The form instructions have a worksheet to determine eligible census tracts.

I got the update today and successfully filed. Even though my GEOID does not appear in either Appendix of Notice 2024-20, the review and filing went through.

I'm DONE!
