I am doing 2023 taxes this year for a family member who is now in a nursing home. Last year she used a Practitioner to do hers. On the form 8879, he was authorized to generate a pin for her. On the same form, he generated an ERO's EFIN/PIN for himself.

My e-file for 2023 keeps getting rejected by the IRS. I have put in last year's AGI from line 11. I have used the last 5 digits of the practitioner's EFIN/PIN. I have tried using her generated pin (which of course is different than his pin.)

How can I resolve this issue so the IRS will accept the e-file?

Thank you,

southieguy

Yes, sometimes it can be difficult to match the last year's AGI. Since you have tried all the basics, getting the AGI from the IRS is you next best option.

Follow this link to get started. Scroll down to Alternative methods near the bottom.

If you can't get the AGI that way, you may need to print and mail in the tax return.

I use the Mac version of the downloadable version of TT every year, have imported last years e-filed and accepted data, the AGI is imported from last years by TT, I don't even have to enter it... I've been rejected 3 times already and always with the same code IND-031-04... this is making no sense, there is clearly an issue with the software or the TT e-file interface. The AGI is correct, I can see and confirm it on the accepted 1040 from my last year's e-file.

The IRS uses your prior year AGI to combat fraud.

You can find your 2022 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) by:

Looking at line11 on page 1 of your 2022 Form 1040; or

You can request a transcript of your 2022 tax return from the IRS to ensure you have the right number. You can request your transcript online at the following link: Get Transcript

Check these items as well to ensure you have the correct number.  If you:

Filed late last year after mid-November or your return was processed after that time—try entering 0.

Amended your return last year—make sure you’re using the AGI from your original return, not the amended one. (If you only have a 1040X form, it’s on line 1, column A).

Rounded your AGI to the nearest dollar—be sure to round up when it’s 50 cents or more and down when it’s 49 cents or less.

Filed with your spouse last year—you and your spouse have the same 2022 AGI. (Don’t split the AGI amount or enter  0  for one of you).

Time-saving Tip: If what you entered is correct and you continue to get a reject, you won't be able to e-file. There's probably a data mismatch at the government, or some other situation beyond your control that prevents your return from being e-filed. In this case, your only option would be to print and mail in your return.

This article will give you instruction on how to print and mail your return.
