To find your GEOID census tract number, go to Census Geocoder. After you enter your address, scroll down to the bottom of the following page. Your 11 digit GEOID will be listed under Census Tracts. This 11 digits is your State+County+Tract number.

What do you enter if your home was built after 2020 and "No Matches" are returned? To confirm I entered my address in the correct format, I entered an old address and results were returned.

If you don't find your address in the Census Geocoder and believe that this is because it's too new, see if you can find an address very close to yours that is listed and verify that your address is in the same tract.

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (IRA) added a requirement that qualified alternative fuel vehicle refueling property must be placed in service in an eligible census tract. An eligible census tract is any population census tract that is a low-income community as described in § 45D(e) or that is not an urban area.

IRS Notice 2024-20 contains detailed temporary guidance about the requirement pending issuance of proposed regulations.

I've been advised that, although the form is generally ready, some calculations that are new for 2023 are still being worked on, and that the tentative day of release for Form 8911 is now February 28, 2024.

Hi , If I found 11 digit Geoid that would be enough? how can I make sure for low-income area? as you mentioned.

If, once you found your property's 11-digit GEOID, you were able to locate your GEOID in the correct Appendix (see below), then your property is eligible for the credit if it meets the other requirements. If your property's GEOID is NOT listed in the Appendix, then it is not eligible for the credit. Listing in the Appendix is what confirms that the property qualifies. Finding the 11-digit ID is just the first step.

To qualify for the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit, reported on Form 8911, refueling property must be used to store or dispense clean-burning fuel or to recharge electric motor vehicles.

In addition, the property must:

Be placed in service during the tax year
Have original use that began with the taxpayer
Be used primarily in the U.S. and U.S. territories
If not business or investment use property, be installed on property used as a main home
Be in an eligible census tract (as of January 1, 2023)
Be depreciable property if not for personal use

For property placed in service before January 1, 2025:

Locate your property on the 2015 Census Tract Identifier and copy your 11-digit census tract geographic identifier (GEOID).
Look up your GEOID in Appendix A PDF. If your GEOID is not listed, then your property is not eligible for the credit.

For property placed in service after January 1, 2025:

Locate your property on the 2020 Census Tract Identifier and copy your 11-digit census tract geographic identifier (GEOID).
Look up your GEOID in Appendix B PDF. If your GEOID is not listed, then your property is not eligible for the credit.
