Why do you need an IP PIN because your mother is claiming you as a dependent?

Click here for information on how to get an IP PIN. Be aware that once you get the IP PIN, you cannot opt out of it, meaning you will have to use it forever on your return.

Do you actually need an IP PIN? If you did not have one in the past, if your mother is trying to enter you on her return and came to the section asking for the IP PIN, that can be skipped for you if one was never issued for you. If one was issued, you can click here to Retrieve you IP PIN.

Do you not qualify as her dependent and you are trying to stop her from claiming you? If so, when you file your return, all you need to do is NOT check the box that says someone can claim me as a dependent. If you do not say someone can claim you they will not be able to claim you. However, if you are a dependent of your mothers, you MUST say she can claim you as this makes you ineligible for certain credits, even if she does NOT claim you.

Will provide that information---but first---CAN she claim you? You have provided no information. How old are you? Were you a full-time student in 2023? How much income did you receive in 2023----not counting any Social Security? Who paid for your food, shelter, and clothing? Medical expenses?

The criteria your parent has to use:

WHO CAN I CLAIM AS A DEPENDENT?

You can claim a child, relative, friend, or fiancé (etc.) as a dependent on your 2023 tax return as long as they meet the following requirements:

Qualifying child

They're related to you.

They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.

They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.

They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.

They're under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).

No age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.

They lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).

They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.

Qualifying relative

They don't have to be related to you (despite the name).

They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.

They're a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.

They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.

They lived with you the entire year (exceptions apply).

They made less than $4,700 in 2023.

You provided more than half of their financial support.

When you add someone as a dependent, we'll ask a series of questions to make sure you can claim them. There may be other tax benefits you can get when you claim a dependent.

If someone who should not claim you does so and files first, your e-file will be rejected. When that happens, you need to file by mail. The IRS will process your mailed return and then later the IRS will sort out the duplicate use of your SSN.

6-digit IP NUMBER FROM IRS

https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/USIRS/bulletins/2af48f0?reqfrom=share

to get you new PIN from the IRS
