We live in a state that has a state income tax and our son goes to college in a different state that also has an income tax. Last year, he did a little tutoring work on campus and got a check for $60 (or so). It does not look like the college is going to issue a 1099 or W-2. He'll need to file a home state return, but does he need to file a return for the college state?

Thanks in advance!

You may not have to file any tax returns for your son If he only earned $60, Most states have a deductible that is higher than that.

You can check this on the List of Department of Revenue by state List of state DOR's.

If he has other income that he earned in his home state he would include the $60 on both his state and federal return as Miscellaneous income.

On the Federal return it is posted to:

Wages and Income

Scroll to Less Common Income

Select Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C [Start or Revise]

Select Other income not already reported on a Form W-2 or Form 1099

@JohnB5677 , your feedback is certainly much appreciated. My son did work a little during break but his total income is a couple thousand total. We're still going to file the federal and home state returns, but in checking the income threshold for the college state, he's certainly below the minimum.
