So sorry for your loss. Yes, the IRS will allow tax returns for deceased taxpayers (also called decedent returns) to be e-filed.

You can use your mother's ID information (Drivers License) for purposes of filing this return.

Before you file a decedent return, make sure the Social Security Administration has been notified of the taxpayer's death.

You can either go to their website or call 1-800-772-1213.

Many (but not all) states allow decedent tax returns to be e-filed as well. TurboTax will let you know when you get ready to e-file the state return.

Click here for information on what forms you will need when filing a tax return for a deceased person.

when efiling with Turbotax for my mother who died in 2023, when signing the return, it asks for PIN and date of birth. Do I enter my mother's birth date or mine as the personal representative? I'm including a form 1310 as part of the efile. as a final step in efiling the return, Turbotax asks for drivers license # and dates. Is this my mother's ID info as the tax payer or my ID info as her personal representative filing the return and receiving the refund?
