Yes, it can happen. Sometimes an employer makes changes that result in obtaining a new or changed employer identification number (EIN). It can be a reorganization or a change in ownership. It's more common than you might think.

Examples: They might change the entity, to any of the following a corporation, LLC, or partnership. Companies are considered separate legal entities, and both must have separate EINs for federal tax purposes.

another possibility is they changed payroll processing companies.

You would have to ask the employer why it changed. Anyway enter both the W2s. Did you maybe change the dept you were in or location?
