Thank you for the response. I was pretty confident in the claiming him as a dependent. I am still puzzled by the 1095A as it is in my name for his coverage. My name and SSN on the header, our son and his SSN in the body. When I input the information into Turbo Tax, it wants to calculate the SLCSP for me and my spouse, not for a 29 year old. My husband and I are NOT on this or any marketplace plan as we are both covered by a workplace health plan.

So how do I get TT to do this correctly?

I received a 1095A in my name where our 29yo adult son is the only one covered. We submitted the application with our family income for integrity reasons since we do support him and we pay the premiums. He does have less than $1500 in Other Income to report. I'm assuming I should file his taxes for the income he received but how do I handle the 1095A? Can we still claim him as a dependent as in previous years? When reviewing the tax tool for SLCSP as our form 1095A had all zeros in Column B and Column C, the paid premiums were actually greater than the SLCSP. I have been unable to find the answers within my Turbo Tax interview.

Yes, you can claim him as a "Qualifying Relative."

You can claim a child, relative, friend, fiancé(e), and so on as a dependent on your 2023 taxes as long as they meet the following requirements:

Qualifying child:

They're related to you.

They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.

They're a US citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.

They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.

They're under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).

There's no age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.

They lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).

They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.

Qualifying relative:

They don't have to be related to you (despite the name).

They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.

They're a US citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.

They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.

They lived with you the entire year (exceptions apply).

They made less than $4,700 in 2023.

You provided more than half of their financial support.

When you add someone as a dependent, we'll ask a series of questions to make sure you can claim them. There may be other tax benefits you can get when you claim a dependent.

When he files his own return, be sure that he indicates that he can be be claimed as a dependent by someone else (you). When he does that, the program will not ask him any questions about his health coverage.
