I thought this year I would try entering my info form by form as I received them in the mail as opposed to going through the total walk through. I have a very simple tax situation. Anyway, I have received my SS income statements and one 1099-R. I entered them in but the number at the top (Federal Refund) still shows 0. I would thing this would change one way or another. Is there something I need to do to "force" a calculation.

Thanks for any help

So far you have entered Social Security---which is not taxable unless you have some other income. And you have entered an amount from a 1099R but we do not know how much you entered from that 1099R, so we cannot say if you entered enough to make the SS taxable. Just wait until you have entered ALL of your income. The "refund monitor" does not mean anything you can take seriously until you have everything entered.

Yes, you can always change a number and then choose Review as many times as you like, in the Step-By-Step page at the top.

Check to see if you have any federal withholding on either document.

The filing requirement is shown below for your review, simply click the link to see if you are required to file a return.

Do I need to file a federal return?

As noted by xmasbaby0, if half of your social security, combined with your other taxable income is below $25,000 for single ($32,000 for married, or $0 for married filing separate), then none of your social security would count as taxable income.

Thank you all. That is correct, once I started entering in the rest of my income the number at the to started moving as expected. I'll still do the walk through at the end, but this at least gives me the level of pain I can look forward to;+}
