Which product do I need for Home & Business, plus Trust Return (1041), plus gift tax return (709)?

Hello,

I need to file 2023 Federal and California state income tax returns for my late mother, who passed away in 2023. I helped her file her 2022 taxes using Mac Desktop Turbotax Home & Business, and I have the .tax2022 file from this to simplify the 2023 taxes.

For her 2023 taxes, as her trust is no longer a living trust, I will also need to file a Trust tax return (forms 1041 & schedule K).

I also will need to file a Gift Tax Return, Form 709, however I've always had to do this on my own and outside of the Turbotax product line.

My question is: Which downloadable Mac TurboTax Desktop product do I need to complete her 2023 returns? Or, although I dislike the online products, which online product must I use?

For the personal returns you can use ANY of the downloaded personal versions so you can save a few bucks and use the Deluxe (Basic if you do not need a state return) instead of the higher priced "recommended" one they try to push. For the trust you will need the TT Business version (not the same as the personal H&B version) which is only available for WIN. If the trust is simple you may want to try doing it manually ... get the forms from the fed/state websites.

And....TurboTax does not provide or support form 709. That form is not part of an income tax return. You are on your own with that form and it must be mailed in to the IRS.

Thanks for the information. There was a Schedule K1 on my late mother's returns, I believe that is why I had the Desktop Home & Business edition, so I will presume I need at least that product level to file her 2023 returns.

It's too bad TurboTax doesn't support the Form 709 Gift Tax Return. I will do the Gift Tax Return on my own - I've done so for the past 3 years.

And for doing a Trust Return, since I don't have a Windows machine, does TT Business have a web-based offering I could use? If not, that's pretty much three strikes so I might as well find a competitor's computerized offering to do the Trust tax returns. (I don't like to work with the actual paper forms because I like to play with numbers and do what-if scenarios.)
