My wife and I are taking care of her 6 year old nephew. This was designated as a kinship placement in Florida; we reside in Texas. Do we claim him as a dependent?

September 6 of 2023? Sorry... no you cannot claim him as a dependent for 2023 since he will not live with you for at least six months of 2023. Perhaps 2024 will change that for you and you may be able to get child-related credits on your 2024 tax return.
