Yes, you can claim your child as a dependent on your 2023 tax return. You only need to indicate that the child lived with you for the entire year if you use a tax program such as TurboTax.

You will be eligible for the Child Tax Credit of $2,000 on the 2023 return. The only other deductions you can claim for the child will be for any medical expenses you paid for the child. Those are entered as itemized expenses on Schedule A. However, the total of all your itemized deduction must be greater than the Standard Deduction for your filling status to have any tax benefit.

For your partner, you will not be able to claim them as a dependent since they did not live in your home for the enter tax year of 2023. Assuming that you are not married.

Hi, new father here!

Was wondering if I would be able to put my son, who was born April 2023, into my taxes?

Whats the child tax credit?

Also, should I put my partner as a dependent? She has been living with me since April 2023. She used to live with her parents. She had no income 2022 as she takes care of the child full time.

Are there any child expenses I should put down that are not too common? What about the common ones?

Any other information related to this would be so helpful!

Congratulations for your new bundle of joy!!

Yes, of course, you would be able to claim your son as your dependent for the whole year 2023.

Child Tax Credit is up to $2,000 but it is phased out at higher income levels, see link below.

See link below to determine whether you can claim your partner as a dependent.
