It's not a single limit for everyone. It depends on the types of income you have, your filing status, whether someone can claim you as a dependent, your age, and other factors. You can use the calculator at the following link on the IRS web site to see if you have to file a tax return.

If your only income is under $600, then you won't get a 1099 form, so you can get away with not filing. However, if you made $600 of side money and you have other income, then you need to consider reporting it. That said, there's an IRS limit of $12,950 for single filers. and the list goes on. Bottom line, your specific circumstances will determine whether you need to file or not.

"not required" to file might be beside the point. If you worked and had tax withheld from your paychecks, then even if you earned under the limit to be required to file, you would want to file a tax return in order to seek a refund of the amounts in boxes 2 and 17 of your W-2.

If you had even $400 of self-employment income, you are required to file and pay self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare.

Who has to file?
