I filed an extension for my federal return and am now ready to file, but turbo tax doesn't seem to

be recognizing that I filed an extension or including the 4868 with my forms to file.

Help!

You don't need to say you filed an extension on your tax return, the IRS knows. Did you send in a payment with the extension?

If your extension payment did not automatically show up on 1040 you need to enter it. So make sure it's not already there before you enter it!

For 2022 Federal Extension payments should be on schedule 3 line 10. And go to 1040 line 31.

You can type estimates paid in the search box at the top of your return and click Find and it will give you a link to Jump To the screen where you enter Extension Payments.

To enter the amount you paid with an extension (including state extension) go to

Federal Taxes (or Personal for desktop H&B version)

Deductions and Credits

Then scroll way down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid

Other Income Taxes - Click the Start or Update button

Next page second section Payments with Extension

Either Visit All or Click Start or Update by the extension you paid

The Form 4868 is not included with the 2022 federal return, the IRS already knows the 4868 has been filed.

Oh ok thanks! When I try to file electronically, it is including estimated tax vouchers as if I was filing on April 18th. This is confusing!

If you owe tax due, you were supposed to pay the estimated amount with the extension request by the April filing deadline. If you do not owe, or are getting a refund, you did not even need to request an extension. You have three years to file and receive a refund.

Those 4 quarterly estimates are for 2023 when we file it in 2024. Do you think you will owe on next year's return too? The estimates are optional to pay. They don't get sent to the IRS with your return so they won't be expecting them. If you are receiving a refund or low tax due and Turbo Tax prepared the vouchers then your tax liability was probably reduced by credits. They might have printed out if you got a one time large income this year like if you took a IRA or 401k distribution. You can ignore them if you want. They are just a suggestion.

the IRS has the form so including it with the 1040 filing is not required. depending on how you filed it, you may need to enter any extension payments you made. no extension payment - you good to go through the final steps to e-file. (final step click on the transmit now icon"
