Filing Form 709

I understand that TT does not support Form 709 so does that mean that the doner cannot file electronically? Or can the donor file his/her tax return electronically and then mail Form 709 separately?

Form 709 is always filed separately from your tax return, even though it has the same deadline. A professional tax preparer might be able to e-file form 709, but it can’t be e-filed through TurboTax. You would have to print it out, fill it in, and mail it to the IRS.

You can file your individual income tax return electronically and then you must separately file Form 709 by mail.

As has been mentioned, TurboTax does not support Form 709. Further, Form 709 cannot be filed electronically (even by a professional tax preparer using professional tax preparation software); it must be printed and mailed.

Form 709 is a reporting requirement only. No taxes are assessed unless the gift exceeds $11.2M, which generally, is not going to happen for those of us who file our own taxes. Also note that the mailing address for the form 709 may not be the same as where you mail your 1040 tax return.

The lifetime gift and estate tax exemption is $12.92 million for the 2023 tax year (and that figure can change, up or down).

An original Form 709 is mailed to the same address unless a private delivery service is used:

Department of the Treasury
Internal Revenue Service Center
Kansas City, MO 64999

Form 709 is not part of your income tax return. It's a completely separate tax return that has to be filed separately from your Form 1040 income tax return. Form 709 is a gift tax return, not an income tax return.
