Use the Tax Withholding Estimator on the IRS web site to figure out what to put on your W-4 form. Enter your wife's SSDI where it asks about Social Security benefits.

You can determine what to put on your W-4 by using the tools on the last screen of the Withholding Estimator, the Results screen, where it tells you that you will owe tax. Scroll down to where it says "Adjust Your Results to Avoid Owing a Balance." Move the slider to select the approximate refund amount that you want. Then scroll down a little more and click the plus sign next to "How to Adjust Your Withholding." It will tell you exactly what to put on each line of the W-4. Be sure to read the notes in the yellow box below that.

thank you I didn't see that part. i went in and changed so that it added a little over what the site suggested to avoid having to pay in. that takes care of fed. for my state(maine) i changed it to married but withholding at single rate to see if that fixes state.
