I reside in Texas (where there is no income tax) and I have W2s in New Mexico and Arizona. I do not live in NM or AZ and work remotely in Texas.

Based on my understanding, I do not pay income tax in Texas. And I do not need to pay state taxes in NM or AZ, correct?

Also, I make less than 18K at AZ so my understanding is that I don't need to file an AZ state tax return.

Thanks!

Hi Andrea,

Income gets reported to the state it's earned in. Generally, this means out-of-state workers have to file a return for their work state in addition to their resident state. You stated you resides in Texas, which has no state income tax, therefore you do not have to file a Texas state tax return.

Since you recieved W2 forms for New Mexico and AZ, you will file a non resident tax return for those states.

My question to you to clarify the situation would be whether you had tax withheld on your W2 for New Mexico and AZ and your tax situation. You may qualfiy for a refund of the tax withheld in those states .

Hope this resolves your question.

Mary
