NYS requires e-file, but Federal is past e-file deadline. How do I file?

I am in a catch-22 where I am supposed to e-file my state return, I am past the deadline to e-file my federal return, and TT says I must e-file both together.

I have completed my 2021 taxes using TT Deluxe. At the end I can choose to file by paper or e-file.

In the File section, there is a message saying "E-filing is closed for the season, you can file by mail."

On the next screen, a message says that "You are required to e-file your New York State income tax return.

I have printed out the Federal return. When I go back to e-file the NYS return I see a message "This return cannot be e-filed before your federal return has been e-filed."

How should I file?

You must select the option to File by Mail so that you can print and mail the NY tax return.

The NY tax return does not have to be e-filed if the software you are using does not support e-filing. TurboTax software for tax year 2021 does not support E-filing a tax return after October 2022.

It is not possible to e-file any sort of 2021 tax return using TurboTax. The return can only be filed by mail.

New York prefers e-filed returns, but there are certain circumstances that make it necessary for you to file your NY return by mail and the state DOES allow mailed returns. If you could not or did not e-file your federal return then your NY return cannot be e-filed. It has to be mailed. It is not possible to e-file any state return if the federal return was not e-filed and accepted by the IRS.
