I lived in California the first half of the year, while my employment was in Illinois (my employer processed everything as though I was in Illinois the entire year). I moved to Illinois the second half of the year. I owed California $5000 and it made sense that Illinois would owe me nearly $4000.

Hi,

I utilized Turbotax to file my tax return, as I do every year. However, this year there is a substantial discrepancy between when Turbotax calculated as my Illinois state tax return ($3945) and what the state provided as my actual return ($115). How do I make sense of this and ensure I'm getting the return I paid Turbotax to calculate?

Having that large a refund for the state is IL is very unusual ... did you check your data entries for a missed key ?

They will mail a letter of explanation for the change usually in a couple of weeks.

Take a close look at the amounts you entered from boxes 16 and 17 of your W-2's or look at any other tax documents you entered that showed IL tax withheld. It is likely you added a zero or misplaced a decimal somewhere.
