Update - when I go to the IRS epay website, I can see the two withdrawals. The first one, that I initiated, says the method is "Online Account". The second one, that I did not initiate, says "E-File". "E-File" is also the method for the payment of my 2021 taxes, which I did allow TurboTax to do. So this looks like a smoking gun, putting the blame on TurboTax.

I paid my 2022 taxes last week via irs/epay. The funds were withdrawn the next day. This morning I wake up to a notice from my bank that I am overdrawn. Reason: IRS submitted the EFT transaction twice! I had my bank issue a stop payment on the second withdrawal. I called the IRS, they said that it might have been Turbotax that submitted one of the transfers - is that possible? In past years, I have allowed Turbotax to do that, but this year, there was no place to enter payment information, the system told me to send in a check or use epay. Is there any chance this was a Turbotax problem? Or did the IRS screw up? IRS told me the system will not re-issue the EFT a second time - thank goodness I did not have enough $ in the account to pay it!

The person I spoke to says that the charge as shown on my bank account would say something like "TT" or "Turbotax" if it was initiated by them. It does not. All I can say is, I never entered my bank account information or authorized any payment to the IRS from Turbotax. But they would have had my information from last year's return. I'm not sure who to blame at this point. My bank says they have put in a stop payment, and anyway since there was insufficient funds to pay the second charge, it should go away. When I talked to the IRS, they said if the payment failed, they would not re-initiate it. Fingers crossed.

You must have selected direct debit for the 2021 federal taxes owed. You entered your bank routing and account number for the direct debit. This information was sent with the e-filed 2021 tax return to the IRS. The IRS debited your account based on the information received on the 2021 e-filed federal tax return.

Download the PDF of your 2021 tax return if you used the online editions. In the PDF will be the Federal Information Worksheet. On Part V of the worksheet will be the bank name, routing and account numbers and the date selected to pay the taxes owed. This is all user entered data in the TurboTax 2021 program.

To access your current or prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

Right, I agree that I used TurboTax 2021 to pay the taxes owed last year. My point is, when I completed my taxes for 2022 last week, there was NOTHING said in TurboTax about collecting my bank information, or pointing out that taxes would be automatically deducted. I was totally confused about how to pay the taxes, given that in past years, TurboTax has always taken that last step. I assumed this was no longer a feature, so I paid the balance due myself. I am not an inexperienced computer user - this is a serious flaw in TurboTax.
